Daniel, Maayan, and Yael

What it means to be part of our (messy and diverse) people

When Daniel Slabosky visited his brother in Taiwan and played his music, he didn’t expect to fall in love with a local DJ. When Maayan Hsu moved to Tel Aviv to be with her Israeli boyfriend, she didn’t expect his friends to discourage her from joining the tribe.

With the help of their daughter, Yael, on her first Hebrew birthday(!), the family and I discuss the uniquely Jewish desire to be “universal”, Kol Ish (the tempting voice of a man,) the relationship between being Israeli and being Jewish, whether Tel Aviv or Jerusalem is the more “cultured” city, what secular Israelis do on a Friday night, and why it’s a relief to be confronted by people who are not politically correct.

You can listen to some of Daniel’s music here.
